Growing up immersed in the arts, Abby and Jacob Lewis explored different creative paths within COCA’s walls, shaping their careers and lifelong connection to the organization. From early childhood classes to professional dance careers and arts administration, the Lewis siblings exemplify the impact of COCA’s environment.
Abby Lewis: From Student to COCA Team Member

Abby’s journey at COCA began in the drawing and media arts classes, with summer camps and even a few dance classes sprinkled in. The sense of creativity and community at COCA left a lasting impression. “No matter how many things change at COCA, it still feels familiar, like we were six,” Abby shared. “All of the good experiences I had as a student at COCA kept me coming back.”

Her connection to COCA remained strong as she returned to watch Jacob’s performances after graduating from high school. Eventually, she took on a role as a house manager at COCA; however, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted live events, Abby sought new opportunities.
In October 2023, Abby stepped into a full-time role at COCA as a Development Coordinator, and by March 2025, she was promoted to Development Systems Manager. Now, she plays a crucial role in supporting COCA’s mission by engaging donors and fostering a thriving artistic community.
“Going out in the hallways, seeing emerging artists, and conversing with donors at events continues to prove my active work,” Abby said. “COCA taught me to approach situations with a creative lens and to build community wherever I go.”
Jacob Lewis: From COCA to the Professional Stage

Jacob’s COCA story started with a variety of art classes, but at 13, dance became his primary focus. He first stepped into Lee Nolting’s jazz class, where she immediately recognized his potential and encouraged him to expand his training.

He soon joined COCAdance and Ballet Eclectica, dedicating himself to COCA’s pre-professional division. The training and mentorship he received prepared him for his next step: studying dance at Fordham University’s Ailey School.
After college, Jacob’s career took him around the world, performing with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, TU Dance, and Minnesota Dance Theatre before finding his current home at Repertory Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“It’s cool to get to have the classic modern training I used when I was younger and now bring it into my work today,” Jacob said.
In addition to performing, Jacob is passionate about arts education. He teaches dance outreach programs in schools, leading creative movement classes and helping teachers find innovative ways to engage students. He also teaches ballet, passing on the knowledge and discipline he gained through his training and career.
“COCA did a great job preparing me for college and my professional career,” Jacob said. “We worked with the same caliber of artists that I often find myself collaborating with now.”
A Lifelong Connection to COCA
“COCA has been a huge part of our lives; there wasn’t a day growing up that ‘COCA’ wasn’t mentioned in our household,” Abby said. “And we’re still connected to COCA, which proves just how strong of a community it is.”
Jacob’s advice to current students? “Lean into the mentorship you have here. There are so many great people who are incredibly well-connected. You never know how much you can gain just by asking a simple question about your next steps.”
Whether on stage or behind the scenes, Abby and Jacob apply the skills and values they developed at COCA, demonstrating the lasting impact of their training.
