On July 19, COCA alumni gathered for COCA’s annual Alumni Reunion, a special event that celebrates the achievements of the organization and its students, but also honors individuals whose contributions have shaped COCA’s legacy.
Two of COCA’s longtime supporters, Diane Davenport and Mary Strauss, received special recognition for their outstanding efforts to enrich COCA’s theatre program.
The late Ms. Lee Nolting, a beloved COCA faculty/staff member, was also acknowledged as both Diane and Lee worked closely together. Lee wrote COCA’s early dance curriculum and inspired many students to pursue their careers in the arts. For many alumni, this event was a time to honor Lee’s life and legacy.
We thank our generous supporters and alumni for their significant role in the success and growth of COCA’s programs and their commitment to ensuring accessibility to arts education for future generations.
Diane Davenport
Diane Davenport’s journey with COCA began decades ago when she played a pivotal role in developing its early theatre curriculum and teaching program. As a passionate advocate for arts education, Diane’s impact on COCA is profound.
“At COCA we believe in the transformative power of the arts,” said Davenport. “Every moment has been about fostering creativity and nurturing young talent.”
Her dedication went beyond teaching; Diane also secured funding and grants to integrate the arts into public schools, ensuring broader access to artistic education. Her philanthropic efforts furthered COCA’s mission, making her a cherished mentor and leader within the COCA family.
Mary Strauss
For over 30 years, Mary Strauss’s commitment to the arts in St. Louis and COCA has been unwavering. She underwrote productions like The Little Dancer and played a pivotal role in COCA’s annual summer musical, enhancing the institution’s offering and impact as a presenting sponsor for COCApresents, COCA’s signature performance season.
“COCA embodies everything I believe in—accessibility, excellence, and the transformative power of the arts,” said Strauss.
Mary has made substantial financial contributions to COCA, enabling faculty expansions, program enhancements, and scholarships. Her advocacy and leadership have reinforced COCA’s position within the arts community in St. Louis.
Mary’s influence extends far beyond COCA; her philanthropy has supported numerous arts organizations in St. Louis, including Saint Louis Ballet, Stages St. Louis, Dance St. Louis, and the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation. Her efforts in restoring and programming The Fabulous Fox Theatre have helped to revitalize St. Louis’s cultural scene.
