This summer, COCA and KHAOS Inc. are collaborating to provide enhanced support to COCA campers and teaching artists. KHAOS Inc. specializes in mental health and wellness programs, with a focus on communities affected by toxic and traumatic stress.
How did this collaboration come about?
The collaboration is based on a shared dedication to promoting mental wellness and reliance, as well as a prior professional relationship with COCA President & CEO Indigo Sams. This partnership aims to address the mental health needs within the community by combining COCA’s commitment to creative education with KHAOS Inc.’s expertise in mental health. Together, both organizations are working to ensure that campers and teaching artists receive the support they need to thrive.

Designating a Calm-Down Space
A thoughtful process is involved in creating a calm-down space at COCA:

- Equip the Space: Furnish the area with comfortable seating, soothing décor, and tools including stress balls, art supplies, and calming music.
- Educating Campers and Staff: Ensure that everyone understands the purpose of the calm-down space and how to use it effectively.
Notifying Guardians
Communication between COCA, KHAOS Inc., and parents/guardians is crucial:
- Regular updates: COCA provides daily updates to parents through newsletters and direct communications, keeping them informed about their child’s participation and progress.
- Feedback Channels: Clear channels are established for parents to provide feedback and ask questions.
- Collaborative Meetings: Periodic meetings between COCA and KHAOS staff allow for ongoing discussions about the program’s progress and any issues. Important information is relayed to parents as needed.
