COCA alum JiaLi Deck is returning to COCA as a guest artist in the upcoming production of The Nutcracker, running December 13–15. COCA is thrilled to welcome her back to the stage!
JiaLi grew up dancing at COCA, where she trained extensively as a member of Ballet Eclectica and COCAdance, and performed in summer musicals. In 2024, she was recognized with the Outstanding Soloist award for the Midstates Region at the Regional Dance America National Competition in Daytona Beach, Florida.
“This is the family that raised me,” said Deck. “I love this space, I love this city, and I’m so excited to be back in this production of The Nutcracker.”
JiaLi is currently a freshman at Barnard College, where she is studying dance and sociology. She credits COCA’s programs with providing a strong foundation that has prepared her for her college studies.
“Being at COCA and being a part of a very rigorous and professional dance setting along with my academics, I’ve really been able to find that balance, and that skill has been very helpful in my life at college,” said Deck.
This is now JiaLi’s third time working with The Nutcracker Choreographer Tom Gold, a former soloist with the New York City Ballet and internationally renowned choreographer. Gold has performed leading roles in works by Balanchine, including his appearance as Candy Cane in the 1993 film adaptation of The Nutcracker. JiaLi is excited to perform Gold’s choreography and bring his vision to life.
“The audience should expect something fantastic. Beautiful dancing as always, beautiful storytelling, something that feels close to home,” said Deck.
COCA will also welcome guest artists Carly Greene and David Wright from the Dance Theatre of Harlem, adding even more talent to the production.
